Sustainable Entrepreneurship in LatAm: Towards a More Equitable and Innovative Economy

For our EMBA GNW Module Sustainable Entrepreneurship in LatAm: towards a more equitable and innovative economy, the schedule for live sessions will be from 7am to 10:30am CST.

Additionally we will have some asynchronous activities before and during the week.

Introduction

The program explores the emergence and development of social innovation around the world and places a special focus on the most recent development in Mexico and Latin America. Along the week, you will learn about the different concepts, tools, and attitudes required to lead a social innovation.

Humanity is besieged by many social and environmental problems, such as poverty or climate change. These challenges are complex and require new approaches to develop strong market-based models to tackle them effectively. In this course you will be exposed to the concepts and tools of social innovation, and reflect on some of our most pressing problems from three perspectives:

  • Context. What factors foster or hinder social innovation in a particular context?
  • Agent. Who makes social innovation, why and with what purpose?
  • Mechanisms. What enables people and organizations to combine existing elements in new ways, cutting across sectors and disciplines, to form new social relationships?

Course objectives

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Identify the limits of the current economic, social, and environmental system.

• Understand the different components of a business model to develop an idea that could provide a solution to a social/environmental problem.

• Use the systems thinking perspective to understand and assess sustainability issues.

• Understand the concept of social innovation and its relation to disciplines such as entrepreneurship, intrapreneurship, corporate sustainability, innovation, and strategy.

• Recognize some of the key actors (entrepreneurs, green accelerators, impact hedge funds, among others) in the social innovation scene in Mexico and Latin America.
